Sandia Labs FY22 Laboratory Directed Research & Development Annual Report

R&D 100 Award Winner IRON NITRIDE SOFT MAGNETICS. Global demand for high-efficiency, green energy technologies and products has placed new challenges on the electrical grid, efficient exploitation of renewable energy resources, and all electric-based solutions for transportation (vehicles, aircraft, and ships). All these applications require ultra-high-voltage power semiconductor devices (to reduce energy loss)

with high-frequency ratings (to reduce system size, weight, and volume), and therefore, rely on high performance soft magnetic materials. The Electrochemical Solution Growth of Magnetic Nitrides LDRD project provided seed funding for the initial development of this effort. (PI: Todd Monson).
