Sandia National Labs Academic Programs Collaboration Report

Bringing together two powerhouses of research: Alabama A&M and Sandia

In January 2022, Sandia and Alabama A&M University (AAMU) signed an MOU with the express purpose of combining research strengths in pursuit of solving national problems. This partnership will be characterized by multiple levels of engagement focused on enhancing collaboration between PIs on LDRD projects, developing a sustainable workforce, and accelerating technology adoption. It also holds the potential to increase jointly held Intellectual Property, leading to a greater scale of technology dissemination for the public good. After AAMU became the fifth university to join Sandia’s START HBCU Program, Steve Gianoulakis, Sandia’s AAMU campus executive visited in March to meet Daniel K. Wims, the AAMU university president. Gianoulakis also toured the campus and met with key faculty members to follow up on

research collaborations and student internship opportunities. This meeting facilitated the funding of a late start LDRD collaboration where AAMU will use Sandia provided data to develop data fusion approaches and classification algorithms for target detection using machine learning (ML) algorithms.
