Engineering (R&E) strategic plan. “Our focus,” said Dr. Gillian Bussey, JHTO director, “is not just to leap frog our competitors, but to leap far ahead where our capabilities will be unmatched and not easily imitated.” UCAH Affiliate Consortium Memberships are held by industry, university affiliated research centers, and both private and 18 Federally Funded Research & Development Consortium labs, including Sandia. There are well over 100 Industry Affiliate members including industry leaders such as Boeing, Honeywell International, Lockheed Martin, Northrup Grumman, Raytheon Technologies, Southwest Research Institute, and many more. By working together on the DOD-defined research and prototype projects, all UCAH members will deliver the time-sensitive applied solutions and workforce needed to advance modern hypersonic flight systems in support of national defense. “By working together... all UCAH members will deliver the time sensitive applied solutions and workforce needed to advance modern hypersonic flight systems in support of national defense.”

Hypersonics is a key focus for the nation now, and the Department of Defense (DOD) is supporting this objective through The University Consortium for Applied Hypersonics (UCAH), with Texas A&M selected to be the host university. To rapidly advance hypersonics flight systems for the country, the DOD brought together an inclusive, collaborative network of universities working with government, industry, national laboratories, federally funded research centers, and existing university affiliated research centers. Sandia’s Dennis Helmich, the director of Integrated Military Systems Development, provided the keynote address at the UCAH Spring Forum in March 2022, where over 200 people attended panels focused on “leap ahead” technologies. Beginning in 2022, UCAH and the Joint Hypersonic Transition Office (JHTO) will award over $24 million in applied research and share the newly released Office of the Under Secretary of Defense (OUSD) for Research and
