Sandia National Labs Academic Programs Collaboration Report

Growing a diverse talent pipeline group for supporting critical skills

CONTRIBUTOR Spotlight

Ken Armijo, Sandia systems engineer, was named a 2021 Most Promising Engineer Advanced Degree at HENAAC . Armijo is the vice president of the New Mexico Professional Hispanic Engineers organization.

Since signing the MOU, Sandia and UC Berkeley have been teaming on a variety of recruiting events. In 2021, 11 virtual recruiting events focused on opportunities at the Laboratories with a special focus on the critical skills. Growing diversity is another major goal for Sandia, so collaboration is occurring with several of UC Berkeley’s organizations—Latino/a Association of Graduate Students (LAGSES) who works to recruit, retain, and graduate underrepresented advanced degree students in STEM, and the Society of Women Engineers, who works on campus to highlight the achievements as leaders and engineers. In February 2022, Sandia hosted a panel discussion and dinner with LAGSES, and in March, Sandia and UC Berkeley held a virtual Diversity in STEM Symposium. It featured a panel discussion and career fair specifically focused on advancing climate resilience.

Berkeley Engineering, ranked one of the top three engineering schools in the world, believes that greater collective intelligence through diversity leads to better solutions.
