Sandia National Labs Academic Programs Collaboration Report

Sandia Resilient Energy Systems (RES) Grand Challenge and “Improving Grid Resilience with Optimal Restoration Utilizing Energy Storage,” funded by the DOE Office of Electricity. Three breakout sessions led by Sandia and UT Austin experts focused on key strategic areas: • Microelectronics led by Sandia’s Kate Helean and UT’s Sanjay Banerjee • High Performance Computing and Edge Computing led by Sandia’s Jim Stewart and UT’s Omar Ghattas • Energy Resiliency and Climate Security led by Sandia’s Rob Leland and UT’s Brian Korgel A key part of Sandia Day was the lunch hosted by the Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR), which featured the first in-person LDRD Alliance Partner student researcher poster session. Twenty-five student researchers presented their current work to Sandia and UT Austin leaders and visitors. In conjunction with Sandia Day, six adjunct meetings brought leaders and researchers together to explore ideas for expanded collaboration in hypersonics, decarbonization, disinformation, batteries, Army Futures Command, and material sciences for microelectronics.

Justine Johannes, UT Austin Executive Champion and newly appointed Associate Lab Director for Global Security, attended Sandia Day at UT Austin.

The Spring Sandia Research Poster Event, hosted by UT Austin’s OVPR, allowed student researchers to present their work on Sandia research projects. In addition, the Sandia-sponsored undergraduate Mechanical Engineering Senior Design Bonanza team highlighted their project “AM Optical Alignment Structure,” and two UT Austin students who participated in Sandia’s Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies (CINT) summer program in 2021 presented about their ongoing research.
